“Stripping” refers to the controlled removal of a small amount of enamel from the sides of selected teeth—typically at contact points—to create space and allow proper tooth alignment during orthodontic treatment.
When is stripping used?
Sometimes removing a small amount of enamel from a few teeth provides sufficient space for orthodontic correction.
A) Correction of dental crowding:
The most common use of IPR is to correct dental crowding. Stripping creates the space needed for tooth movement during orthodontic treatment using braces or aligners such as Invisalign.B) Tooth size and length discrepancies:
When corresponding teeth on the left and right sides differ in size or proportion, stripping helps restore balance and improve treatment results.C) Reducing black triangles:
Some smiles display “black triangles” — spaces between teeth not filled by gum tissue. Adjusting tooth contact points through stripping can help close these gaps.D) Improving alignment aesthetics:
In some cases, minor stripping can improve the visual alignment of teeth without major orthodontic procedures.E) Correction of overjet:
When upper front teeth protrude, stripping can slightly narrow them, helping reposition the teeth for a more natural alignment.Amount of enamel removed:
The amount depends on the patient’s case but never exceeds enamel thickness. For anterior teeth, about 0.3 mm per side is typical; for posterior teeth, around 0.6 mm. Usually, IPR provides 0.1–0.5 mm of extra space.Instruments used:
Dentists may use either mechanical (diamond burs or discs) or manual (strip saws) methods. Manual stripping provides more control for minor reductions.IPR technique notes:
Dentists use the strip gradually to remove enamel and may separate teeth slightly using wedges. Overheating must be avoided—cooling with air and water is applied. The spacing is checked regularly using a gauge, and the enamel surface is polished afterward, often followed by fluoride application.
Each strip type in this kit serves a specific purpose and should be used sequentially as directed by the dentist.Black Strip Specifications:

Step 1: Spacing Adjustment
Step 1: Use the green diamond strip to adjust the ideal spacing between teeth and relieve pressure between the indirect restoration and the adjacent tooth without removing tooth contact. This strip should be used before the final cementation of crowns, inlays, onlays, and composite veneers. It is also useful for creating proper spacing for composite restorations.
Step 2: When the space between teeth is too tight and the green strip cannot fit, use the black strip. Its serrated edge penetrates between the teeth and separates them to achieve the ideal distance.
Step 2: Cleaning
Step 1: The yellow strips are designed for safe trimming and cleaning of excess cement remaining between teeth. Before light curing, use this strip to clean veneers and composite fillings in interproximal spaces without altering their position or separation from the adjacent tooth. If the space is too tight, use the black serrated strip.
Step 2: Use the ultra-thin blue strip for deep polishing of the adjacent tooth surface and to remove unnecessary corners of the tooth, providing greater comfort for the patient.
Step 3: Polishing the EASY IN SMILE Interdental Saw and Sanding Kit
Step 1: Use the purple strip to polish the contact surface between two restorations and achieve a natural finish in one step. This strip also helps ensure comfort between two teeth after final cementation. Use the stain removal strip to eliminate and clean stains between teeth.
Sterilization and Maintenance of the EASY IN SMILE Interdental Saw and Sanding Kit:
Step 1: Rinse the Easy in Smile strip directly under running water and clean the stainless steel surface using a toothbrush. Then, use a cleaning solution in an ultrasonic tank for 10–20 minutes.
Step 2: Rinse the Easy in Smile strip again under running water to remove all chemical residues and dry them using air circulation.
Step 3: Sterilize the Easy in Smile strips in autoclave heating systems (not dry heat) at 30 lbs of pressure, a maximum temperature of 270°F (130°C), for 10 minutes. After drying, the strips should be sealed in sterilization pouches with the sterilization date indicated and stored in a dry, well-ventilated place.
