Golchai Chloroform
Chemical Formula: CHCl₃
Golchai Chloroform is an organic solvent belonging to the group of chloromethanes and trihalomethanes. It is a colorless, heavy liquid with a sweet odor, non-flammable, and known for its strong dissolving power.
Use in Dentistry:
In dentistry, chloroform is legally used as a local solvent and sometimes as a topical anesthetic—especially in root canal (endodontic) procedures.
Golchai Chloroform serves as an active disinfectant for treating infected root canals and periapical infections.
A key step in retreatment of root canals is the complete removal of gutta-percha, which ensures mechanical cleaning and proper reshaping of the canal. Chloroform is one of the most effective solvents for gutta-percha, superior to most alternatives in efficiency.
It is recommended that gutta-percha removal be done mechanically in the coronal two-thirds of the root, and with the aid of chloroform in the apical third where access is limited. The softened gutta-percha should not be forced toward periapical tissues to avoid complications.
Chloroform should not be used as an irrigant, but rather as a localized solvent applied carefully using paper points or hand instruments.
After gutta-percha removal, EDTA can be used to eliminate the smear layer, opening dentinal tubules and improving adhesion between the sealer, gutta-percha, and canal walls.
Clinical Guidelines for Retreatment:
-
Remove coronal and middle third gutta-percha using rotary instruments or heat sources (e.g., K3 Shaper).
-
Use chloroform combined with hand files and paper points in the apical third.
-
Avoid extrusion of softened gutta-percha or chloroform into periapical tissues.
-
Whenever possible, perform gutta-percha removal dry, minimizing chloroform use.
-
Chloroform remains the solvent of choice for gutta-percha due to its efficiency and reliability.
